Erasmus Mundus EMMIR Scholarship 2027, Study in Germany & Norway

The Erasmus Mundus EMMIR Scholarship 2027 offers an opportunity to study for a two-year Master's degree in Migration and Intercultural Relations through an international consortium of universities across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

The European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) is a 120 ECTS Erasmus Mundus Master's programme that explores migration, intercultural relations, human mobility, displacement, integration, and related social issues.

Students experience an international study environment across several partner institutions. The programme begins in Oldenburg, Germany, continues in Stavanger, Norway, and later includes international mobility, a project-based internship, and Master's thesis research.

For the 2027 to 2029 intake, applications are currently open. Students applying for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship or a non-fee-paying study place must apply by 20 December 2026 at 23:59 CET.

EMMIR is run through a consortium of partner institutions across Europe, Africa, and Asia. The current network includes institutions in Germany, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Ghana, Uganda, South Africa, and India.

What Does the EMMIR Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Cover?

Selected Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders receive €1,400 per month for 24 months.

The scholarship also covers:

  • University registration fees
  • Student service fees
  • Programme participation costs

The scholarship does not provide a separate travel or installation allowance. Scholarship holders must use their monthly stipend to cover required mobility expenses, including travel, visas, vaccinations, and residence permit fees.

Over 24 months, the monthly scholarship amounts to up to €33,600.

The number of Erasmus Mundus scholarships is limited, and scholarships are awarded based on merit.

Study in Germany and Norway

One of the main features of EMMIR is its international mobility structure.

Semester 1: Germany

The programme begins in Oldenburg, Germany, at the University of Oldenburg.

Students complete the initial intensive phase and first semester before continuing to another partner institution.

Semester 2: Norway

The second semester takes place at the University of Stavanger in Norway.

Students continue their academic work in migration and intercultural relations while studying in a different social and cultural environment.

Semester 3: International Mobility

The third semester includes a project-based internship and a focus module.

Students can gain practical and research experience through the EMMIR partner network across different regions.

Semester 4: Master's Thesis

The final semester focuses on Master's thesis research and writing.

For the 2027 to 2029 edition, thesis submission is scheduled for 30 June 2029, with graduation planned for September 2029.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants should hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in a field related to migration studies.

Relevant academic backgrounds can include:

Academic Requirements

Applicants must have a final Bachelor's degree grade equivalent to at least C+.

For Erasmus Mundus scholarship applicants, the first degree must be completed and documented by the application deadline. A final transcript showing that all required examinations have been completed can be accepted as evidence of a completed degree.

Degree Recency

Your most recent degree should normally not be more than five years old.

If your degree is older than five years, you must explain in your Statement of Purpose why you are returning to university and why EMMIR is relevant to your current goals.

Applicants With a Master's Degree

Applicants who already have a Master's degree can apply.

However, they must provide a convincing explanation for pursuing another Master's degree through EMMIR.

Applicants who have previously received an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship cannot receive another EMJM scholarship.

English Language Requirements

EMMIR is taught in English.

Applicants whose native language is not English or whose undergraduate education was not conducted in English must demonstrate English proficiency.

Evidence can include:

  • An accepted English language test
  • Proof that higher education was completed in English
  • Proof of professional work in an English-speaking environment

The EMMIR consortium can request additional evidence of English proficiency where necessary.

You do not need to upload reference letters with the online application. EMMIR asks applicants to provide the email addresses of academic or professional references so that the programme can contact them directly if required.

How to Apply for the EMMIR Scholarship 2027

The application is submitted online through the eMundus application platform.

Step 1: Check the Requirements

Review the EMMIR eligibility requirements and make sure your academic background and research experience match the programme.

Step 2: Prepare Your Documents

Prepare your CV, academic documents, Statement of Purpose, passport, English language evidence, and other supporting documents.

Your Statement of Purpose should clearly explain your motivation for studying migration and intercultural relations and why EMMIR fits your academic and career goals.

Step 3: Register on eMundus

Create an account on the official EMMIR eMundus application platform.

The application form must be completed in English. You can save your progress and return to the application before submission.

Step 4: Select Your Funding Option

During the application, indicate that you want to be considered for the Erasmus+ scholarship.

The scholarship is merit-based, and only a limited number of scholarships are available.

Step 5: Submit Your Application

Submit your completed application through eMundus before:

20 December 2026 at 23:59 CET

EMMIR recommends submitting your application at least 48 hours before the deadline to avoid problems caused by technical issues.

Step 6: Selection

The EMMIR team and consortium evaluate applications.

The Selection Board is scheduled to meet at the end of March 2027. Successful applicants are expected to receive notification from the beginning of April 2027.

The 2027 to 2029 EMMIR programme begins on 1 September 2027.

EMMIR Scholarship 2027 Deadline

The deadline for Erasmus Mundus scholarship applicants is:

20 December 2026 at 23:59 CET

The same deadline applies to applicants seeking non-fee-paying self-funded study places.

Fee-paying self-funded applicants can apply until study places are filled, or until 15 July 2027, whichever comes first.
